Local Activities

Walking

This area of the YORKSHIRE DALES is a place where life has a relaxed and unhurried pace.

Miles of public footpaths give access to some of the finest walking country in England. From gentle nature trails, riverside strolls and waterfall walks, to strenuous fell walks. Leave the car behind, you can start many walks from The Oast Guest House, or use train, bus or taxi to explore farther afield.

Cycling

The Yorkshire Dales Cycle Way is approximately 240 km and passes nearby, going through Settle, up towards Dentdale, Wensleydale, Coverdale and Wharfedale. This route is marked by the blue and white cycle markers. A Yorkshire Dales National Park publication is available from local Tourist Information Centres.

Also near by is the beautful Bowland countryside, including the Hodder Valley and Gisburn Forest.

Settle - Carlisle Railway

Situated just 6 minutes walk from The Oast Guest House, is Settle Station, the start of the 72 miles long Settle-Carlisle Railway.

Settle-Carlisle Railway

Considered to be one of Englands most scenic journeys, it was completed for passenger travel in 1876.

Saved from closure in by the Friends of The Settle-Carlisle Line and many other pressure groups it now holds a special place in local life and tourism.

Take a trip to the historic border city of Carlisle, or stop at Appleby and enjoy the picturesque river Eden and the Norman castle, before continuing to Carlisle.

Leave your car here and use the scheduled trains to stations where you can walk from and return to-so have a break from driving, enjoy a great train ride and treat yourselves to a walk into the bargain!
